Loose Gravel Hoax
Well many times as we drive through Lexington highways and byways we sometimes overlook the many warning signs that are placed there for our protection. For example if you have driven around Lexington’s downtown area you have noticed the many detours, sewer and waterline construction that takes place overnight. The next morning during your normal morning commute you will be riddled with detours, temporary roadway and long delays. Now if the contractor performing this “Improvement” was following the correct guidelines provided by state and local authorities they would appropriately have to install signage to properly maintain traffic during construction periods.
My specific issue is lately traffic sign’s throughout Lexington’s vast street and road projects are left for months on end when nothing is really going on. Remember the fable “The Boy who cried wolf” well in this fable the boy cried wolf falsely multiple times and eventually when there was a wolf nobody believed him. Today I was driving back to work and noticed a few new signs located on the street near the office where I work. Oh my goodness “Loose Gravel” there must have been a large gravel truck spill, maybe some street construction or utility work that has sporadically plagued Lexington lately. Since the roadway is basically a driveway and excessive speeds are not usually a problem in the first place, I cautiously proceeded watching for items in the roadway that might cause me to lose control and cause an accident. Within seconds I was safely in my usual parking spot and had an opportunity to reflect on the signage and if I was impacted by loose gravels or felt like I was in danger. Well I have to honestly say I did not feel in danger nor did I even see any loose gravel. Oh yes I’m sure there was a gravel strategically hidden that might cause a skateboarder to lose footing for maybe a few seconds, but nothing sign worthy.
Well for the last few days these two “Loose Gravels” construction sign’s have found permanent residence in our local street with minimal fanfare. Most people glance at the temporary “Loose Gravel” message and chuckle and drive on to destination not knowing the dangers that could be around them. I cautiously hold on to the fact this could be the city crying “Wolf” and tomorrow as I come to work there could be a pit with “Loose Gravels” and I could plummet head first into Lexington abyss. So Lexington let this be your warning, yes they do mow the grass at 3:00am on New Circle Road, Loudon Ave is a permanent work zone, Limestone at UK don’t go there, and “Loose Gravels” could ruin you day! Is the “Loose Gravels” traffic sign a hoax or teenage prank? Could be, but for me I choose to believe.
