MyWi - It Just Works.
Well, it's time to add on to the "It Just Works" Series for the Iphone. This time it's not the hardware that I'm going to talk about, it's an App that I am pleased with and "JUST WORKS". Many of the Apps on my phone are for fun and general enjoyment, but this particular App is a great productivity App.
Without Further Ado, I want to introduce MyWi. Now you're likely asking "What does it Do"... Below, is the description from the Developer.

- Create WiFi Hotspot to connect mutiple laptops or mobile devices to share your iPhone''s internet connection
- 40 bit and 104 bit WEP Security to prevent others from accessing your WiFi HotSpot
- Ability to enable USB and Bluetooth Tethering on your iPhone as well
- Uses less battery and much faster then PdaNet due to native routing
- Broadcasts the Network Name (SSID) - no need to fuss with creating an adhoc network on your laptop
- Enable iPhone USB/Bluetooth tethering - even on firmware 3.1!
- Shows up and down bandwith usage
Many of you are saying, "Why do I need this?" . It's true, Wifi Hotspots seem to be everywhere now, and it's easy to hook into the net with a Wifi Enabled Laptop. But, guess what, at least twice in the last three weeks, I have been out, needed to log into the net with my Laptop, but didn't have Wifi Available to use. Actually, as I write this article, I am using my MyWi and have my Iphone Tethered to connect to the Net. This just goes to prove Wifi is not FREE or even available everywhere. Therefore, this is why "I" need this app. I am able to connect to the Net, do what I need to do, and log off.
One of the best part of this App, and most all other Iphone Apps that I use is that "IT JUST WORKS". As I've already written about, my Iphone has been Jailbroken, which allows me to use the Rock App. The Rock App is basically an App Store for Jailbroken phones. All I had to do was Install MyWi from Rock, and begin tethering and using my Iphone's 3G to surf the net on my Laptop.
at&t Disclaimer:
at&t Currently has a couple of different options for using 3G service to surf the Internet on a Laptop. Sadly, they also charge quite a bit "EXTRA" to use this service utilizing the Hardware they provide. Their "Official" Hardware is a USB Key that serves as a USB Modem. "Officially" neither at&t , nor Apple approve of using the the Iphone as a Modem, but this was a feature displayed and demo'd by Apple. The Problem is at&t has not determined how to charge the end-user more to use this feature. Therefore, if you choose to use this App, Be sure an use at your own risk, but I feel confident that as long as long as it is not used excessively, then you should not have any trouble.
